With the return of warm weather, vacations and humidity, insects are coming back into our environment. And a sting is then quickly arrived. Depending on the beast that attacks you, the reflexes to adopt are not always the same. Follow our little guide.

Mosquito and horsefly bites: fine lavender to soothe

If the bite itches so much, it is because of the saliva of the insect. Disinfect with an antiseptic lotion or soap and water, then apply an antipruritic cream several times a day containing a local anesthetic (Eurax, Quotane...). One drop of essential oil of fine lavender or aspic on the pimple also helps to disinfect, soothe and heal. If the pimple swells and itches a lot, use a cream or gel containing an antihistamine and/or cortisone (Onctose Hydrocortisone, Cortapaisyl, Dermofenac..., available over the counter).

Sting of Augustate: eliminate the larvae before all

The larvae of this mini-mite present in grass (be careful with picnics) cause red papules and irritations in the folds of the skin, bra elastics, belt, socks... A few hours later, it is very itchy! The ideal is toto apply the antiparasitic lotion Ascabiol (in pharmacy) with a cotton ballto kill the larvae, then a local soothing cream containing an antihistamine, or even taking an oral antihistamine if itching is severe (Zyrtecset and generic cetirizine, available over the counter).

Bee, wasp or hornet sting: watch for swelling and hives

Start with removing the stinger if it's a bee : do not use tweezers to avoid piercing the venom pouch, but a rigid card (credit card type) to gently slide towards the exit point. If it throws, try to neutralize the venom with heat by holding the end of a lit cigarette, cigarette lighter or hair dryer close to the wound for a few minutes. Disinfect with an antiseptic spray or wipe. In case of itching, apply an antihistamine and/or hydrocortisone cream, or 1 or 2 drops of lavender aspic essential oilwhich is effective because of its slightly anesthetic action. If you have been stung in the throat or mouth, or if you swell up or get hives, call 15 (Samu) without delay, as this can cause angioedema and anaphylactic shock. Also remember to immediately remove rings and bracelets if you are stung on the hand.

Tick bite: general inspection!

The bite of this mite found in the forest (from the edge) or in some gardens can transmit diseases, including Lyme disease, via a bacterium. After a walk in nature, inspect the whole body thoroughly, especially the folds of the skin (ask someone to look in the neck and back). If you spot a tick, remove it with a tick puller: slide it under the beast and turn it gently - if not, use tweezers by pulling upwards. Then disinfect with an antiseptic. Monitor the bite site for a month and consult if an erythema (red and round plaque) forms around it, and/or in case of fever, fatigue...

Hence the budgetary envelope of 5,000 euros voted during the City Council of this Tuesday, March 8, to help citizens to better live with the presence of these tiger mosquitoes. The aim of forming a group of local residents is to set up, little by little, "anti-mosquito barriers".

In order to benefit from a 50 euro subsidy per household, a group of at least five neighboring residents, whether contiguous or not, must be brought together within a 150 meter perimeter. Each household that buys a trapping device will be able, by following these conditions (read elsewhere), to benefit from these 50 euros of aid. The devices in question are worth between 100 and 170 euros, or even a little more depending on the model, and are available in local garden centers. These devices simulate human odors that attract tiger mosquitoes, then suck them in.

Training neighborhood councils

These devices are the last resort, once oviposition and larval control have failed. "Aedes albopictus, from their scientific name, need only a tiny bit of water to develop and a vertical wall to lay eggs. The females lay eggs every three or four days and between 70 and 150 eggs each time, so reproduction goes very fast," continues Frédéric Martin.

He and two other city employees have been trained by the Regional Health Agency to fight against larvae breeding sites, before it is too late. The goal is for them to spread the word to other agents, but also to offer training to the presidents of the neighborhood councils, who will then pass on the message to their neighbors. When it comes to fighting tiger mosquitoes, it's best to play as a team, since these insects have a range of action of between 70 and 150 meters. It is sometimes enough to empty stagnant water bowls or to put some tulle over a water tank to avoid laying eggs. And be able to enjoy your garden in complete peace of mind.

Two billion genetically modified mosquitoes will be released in parts of Florida and California in the United States. Responsible for an estimated 750,000 deaths per year, the mosquito is the most deadly species for humans.

It is a release of mosquitoes of an unprecedented scale, conducted by the American company Oxitec, and which aims to reduce the population of these insects, and therefore the spread of certain diseases.

The specimens sent into the wild would be males of the species Aedes aegypti, carefully selected since they give rise to nonviable larvae after reproduction.

GMO mosquitoes

Very harmful, mosquitoes are at the origin of serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, the Zika virus and chikungunya. So scientists came up with the idea of genetically modifying them.

These GMO mosquitoes, named OX5034, are harmless to humans. The larvae born from the mating with females, deficient in proteins, die before their maturity.
