An American company will release two billion genetically modified mosquitoes into the wild. Explanations.
Oxitec, an American company, is going to release two billion genetically modified mosquitoes in certain regions of Florida and California. A way to reduce the population of these insects in order to fight against the diseases they transmit.
As reported by RTLThe mosquitoes in question are only males of the species Aedes aegypti. They are designed, when they reproduce with females, to give birth only to non-viable larvae.
According to the scientists, this release of mosquitoes would be without danger for the environment, and less harmful than the draining of wetlands or the pulverization of insecticides. This genetic modification would not be dangerous for the food of their predators, nor for humans. It would drastically reduce the mosquito population, without totally eradicating it.
